Elephant Piñata Mini-Tutorial

So we are having a party!! My little man is turning 1!!!! I can't believe it. Time flies. So for his party we are having a circus! (No silly, not a real circus.) I wanted a piñata because we are going to have like 14 children there and although a 1 year old may not be able to hit a piñata a 7 year old can. Have you priced these babies lately? Ridiculous! So I figured I could make my own. You'll need:

1 large round balloon
Newspaper
Flour & Water
About 10 grocery sacks
Elmers Glue
Hot glue gun
4 disposable cups
cardboard
colored paper

I'm calling this a "mini" tutorial because I skipped the first few steps. I think you can figure out how to make paper-mache. Right? Flour, water and newspaper? So cover up that balloon of yours and let it dry.

This is mine. Isn't it a beauty!!
Next, make your ears and nose out of cardboard. Hot glue them to your paper body. Hot glue your elephant legs on as well.
Next, take your garbage sacks and cut them into small squares. Like 2 x 2 inches. Glue these on in sections to your body.

Next, take colored paper and cover your ears, nose, and legs. Make eyes as well and glue those on.
Now you've got a beautiful elephant piñata for....FREE!!!!

The most time consuming part was putting on the grocery sacks. However, it wasn't too bad. Just use a lot of glue. That is the key. Isn't he cute!

I'll get my boys to practice their swinging skills. That little elephant looks too cute to destroy, though. :(

Happy Birthday! And wow...Arleigh isn't getting anything so cute for her birthday. Hope the kids enjoy smashing it to bits!

Cute idea and a lot less expensive than my kid's last b-day piñata!

Haha, this is so cute! :D

I've never made something like this before...how many layers of newspaper do you cover the balloon with to be sure that it will still break when hit?
Tnx! :)

Naturally Me Creations,
I probably put about 10 layers on my pinata. I only have little ones planning to break it. You could also us cardboard to shape your pinata and that would make it much stronger.
